  • Tessa Perutz creates exuberant landscape paintings exploring dialogues between nature and the human experience. Her paintings and drawings render nature as an experience of colour - her universes are composed of interlocking flat planes in contrasting tones and vibrant hues. Precise, soft strokes of colour denote forests and bodies of water; varied viewpoints recall geometric textile patterns. Though abstracted, these fragmented Fauvist forms seamlessly piece together harmonious compositions singing with light and life. By reducing representation to its essence, she beautifully balances proportions in natural forms, achieving a tranquil sense of resolution.

Perutz’ travels across the US and Europe are frequent and wide ranging, from upstate New York and California, to the Belgian countryside and the French Riviera, and beyond. These outdoor excursions provide her the substructure for her landscapes, all of which are sketched ‘en plein air’ and reworked into canvasses, textiles, furniture, and onto further supports and surfaces.

Her schematic designs include motifs referencing the healing properties of botanical elements such as lavender and hibiscus. This rumination on human sensorial interaction with nature is further emphasised through the use of sand and other natural materials, often sourced from the locations she sketches, and integrated into the physicality of artworks. Her exhibitions are fully immersive, Perutz goes beyond pure visual interpretation to bring the joyful nuances of the natural world to the viewer in tactile, synaesthetic presentations.

For her collaboration with Cactus Moon Studio, Perutz transforms a recent diptych, ‘Path Outside Lavendel Fields, Hasselt #1 and #2’, into two limited edition rugs. Inspired by a trip to the lavender fields in the Belgian countryside, pathways in both compositions invite us to revel in the carefully chosen assortment of earthy and lilac tones. This alternative medium presents a new opportunity to experience and interact with Perutz’s emotive landscapes in the domestic sphere.

Fabricated by experts at Christopher Farr, who have been at the spearhead of contemporary rug design for over thirty years, the lively colour palette of Perutz’s large-scale paintings translates fluently into densely textured hand-tufted wool rugs in the same dimensions as the original artworks. Both designs are available in very limited editions of 15 plus 5 Artist Proofs each, starting at £1,500 + VAT each with prices rising as editions sell out.
