Asif Hoque (b. 1991, Italy) is known for his exploration and celebration of Brown bodies through epic mythological scenes, in which angelic figures and ancient beasts erupt from raw linen canvas and swirling clouds to claim space and reverence.
Based on a new painting created for the occasion of his first foray into printmaking, Hoque has chosen to stay true his core artistic and aesthetic values by replicating the original work in both scale and appearance. Featuring what he considers to be key themes that run throughout his practice – including areas of deliberately exposed linen canvas, the recurring motif of the winged Cupid figure, and attention to Brown and Black skin tones - this hybrid pigment print echoes the process behind, and materiality of, his paintings.
The choice of Hahnemühle German Etching textured paper with hand-torn edges replicates the feel of raw linen canvas and the artist's restrained yet nuanced palette of neutral tones. Additional screen-printed layers in varying finishes highlight Hoque’s considered application of paint in sheer, ethereal layers and signature swirls; light dances off the pearlised ink layers on the wings, whilst glossy eyes charm and draw the viewer in.
