AMY LINCOLN - RECENT WORKS ON PAPER: RAINBOW STUDIES

Amy Lincoln makes imaginative and intensely hued paintings of the natural world, in which sculpted clouds loom over star-spangled skies, waves lap in strict formation across the ocean, and suns radiate palpable rays of vivid colour. In this body of work, Lincoln takes a pointed approach towards depictions of water, weather phenomena, sunlight and rainbows in their most simplified forms and composed like a theatre stage-set. In these seductive, invented worlds where colour acquires a nondescriptive function, objects reflect or refract light and appear in any possible shade. Here, the artist experiments with scale and utilises the attributes of the fast-drying medium of acrylic paint. Instead of opting for a smooth blending of colours to transition from light to dark, she creates careful and deliberate layers of reds, yellows and purples, giving her works a sense of clarity and luminosity.

Consisting exclusively of works on paper, this series allows for further experimentation and new colour ideas to develop. In this body of work, Lincoln explores the rainbow both as a symbol of playful, childlike energy and as an opportunity to depict transparency and atmospheric space. Visualising this transition from one colour to the next is a carefully structured process. Tones of the same colour are juxtaposed precisely and methodically, resulting in a matrix effect always focusing on the contrast of "flat" surfaces creating depth through the juxtaposition of lighter and darker hues. This imagery will be further explored in Amy’s UK solo debut with Taymour Grahne Projects opening on May 7, 2022.
