Jeanne F. Jalandoni (b.1993) is a painter and textile artist born and raised in New York City. As a second-generation American who has never been to the Philippines, her practice delves into the complexities of Filipino American identity, diaspora, and the responsibility of preserving her cultural heritage.
-
Through knitting, weaving, and oil painting, Jalandoni creates layered collages that weave together family archives, personal memories, and Filipino American historical narratives. Her works often blur the boundaries between painting and textiles, reflecting the fluid and evolving nature of identity. The tactile qualities of her materials, such as hand embroidery on Piña— a Filipino textile made from pineapple fibres, serve as metaphors for the importance of cultural preservation and transformation.
-
Jalandoni’s rich, multisensory approach explores the continuous balancing act between cultural inheritance and self-definition, examining the emotional and physical labour involved in navigating multiple worlds. Her work offers a powerful reflection on how the past, present, and future of a family’s cultural legacy are intertwined and sustained through memory and story-telling. In her recent works, she explores themes of grief and loss, reflecting on the emotional impact of losing loved ones and feeling the presence of anticipatory grief. These personal experiences have become an integral part of her practice, allowing her to preserve their memories and keep their connection present. A recurring figure in her work is the carabao (water buffalo), -- a symbolic embodiment of Filipino American experiences and the emotional complexities of inheriting a hybrid identity. She represents warmth, strength, and nurturing qualities, which are inspired by her loved ones. By visualizing the dynamic nature of her bicultural identity, Jalandoni underscores that identity is not fxed or solitary but rather an evolving and multifaceted blend of cultures.

Jalandoni received her BFA in Studio Art from New York University (2015). Some solo and two-person solo shows include exhibitions with Alfred University, Wellesley College, Taymour Grahne Projects, Real Art Ways, and the Berkshire Art Museum. She was an artist-in-residence at 36 Chase & Barns (2018), the Textile Arts Center (2021), Alfred University BIPOC Summer Residency (2024), and the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts (forthcoming; 2025).
