This cottage named Little White sits on the grounds of the Wawona Hotel, one of the oldest mountain resorts built in 1876 to serve tourists visiting Mariposa Grove. The architecture of these early hotels strike an austere tone that conflicts with its pleasant aesthetic. This architecture implies a quiet violence that brews below the surface, unacknowledged but integral to the history of Mariposa Grove. I wanted that sense to come through in a painting of a simple house that a house can represent much more.
