This painting references a scene I saw on a hike in the Five Ponds Wilderness Area in the Adirondack Mountains this summer. A small tree emerging from the base of a large white pine, with another giant white pine in the far distance across the river. Here, I was thinking of generations of trees; old and wise survivors and intrepid youngsters. The imagined family ties between trees. The foliage around them starts to look like a stage, with shallow, almost flat shapes.
