Summer of the Black Swallowtails - more macaroni and cheese, more black swallowtails. My son loves Darth Vader. When we told him he was going to have a baby sister, the first thing he said was, ”Can we name her Darth Vader?’ My guess is there will be a lot of picnics this summer and I am starting sketches for more picnic paintings. I love that subject, it makes me think of Dutch “vanitas” paintings, but picnics, to me, are very American-especially if they involve Darth Vader and macaroni and cheese. With this one I was kind of thinking of the Darth Vader mask as a replacement for the skull in a Vanitas painting.
