This is my quarantine painting, 2020. Over the last 4 weeks the childcare responsibility has shifted largely to me while my partner teaches college from home. The seahorse is notable for the fact the father gives birth to the young. There is also a respectful self reference to Marsden Hartley's amazing nautical still lives of the early 1940's. I enjoy pushing the surrealist tendencies of my paintings by not juxtaposing random elements; but, perhaps more interestingly, through formal choices. This piece challenges the familiar, in this case, the seahorse, by placing it against an unworldly, out of water, solid earth red background.
